ACTIVISM IN THE BADLANDS

EARTHBURNING.ORG: A BOLD, CREATIVE CLIMATE ACTION IN THE BADLANDS OF NORTH DAKOTA
North Dakota has discovered numerous small oil deposits and is voraciously drilling for oil! Unfortunately, sitting on top of all that oil is valuable natural gas which is being released into the atmosphere in massive quantities, enough in fact, to heat 500,000 homes. Although less harmful than filthy coal or dirty oil, natural gas still adds 20 percent to humanity’s egregious CO2 pollution which now stands at 396 parts per million---almost 50 parts more than where we need to be to protect life on Earth as we know it. Please check out Bill McKibben’s 350.org if you’re not aware of this important website.
We, six concerned citizen activists from Massachusetts, ask this important question: With so much fossil fuel energy waste in American and the dire need for more energy efficiency, is this not unnecessary, shameful behavior by the oil companies, media, governor, and the good, concerned citizens of North Dakota who are allowing it to continue? Is there not some kind of creative climate action that we can do that might wake-up and rally the good, caring people of North Dakota to call their governor and demand that these oil companies build a pipeline to capture this valuable natural gas, send it to a refinery, and then donate it back to the people of North Dakota where it belongs?
We, the “inspirational seven”, have planned out a strategic, non-violent civil disobedience action that stresses “great creativity” to call attention to America’s dire need to get off fossil fuels and implement a 100 percent Renewable Energy Revolution as soon as possible! This creative climate action has great potential for making an impact on sustainable change, but it needs caring, Earth supporters like yourself to help bring it to fruition. It will proceed as follows:
Led by team leader international activist Doug Wight and professional photographer Jonathan Doyle, who will fly into Fargo, ND, on March 21, as well as home-based activists Mark Hudya, John Bailey, Garrett Connally, and Maya Apfelbaum, who will coordinate web design, social media, creative strategy, life-size animals on the “endangered list”, and logistics, -- here’s what our team hopes to accomplish:
We will rent a 26’ long by 8’ high moving truck which will be adorned with the following statements and colorful graphics—all designed with the passionate intention of waking-up the media, oil companies, governor, and good people of North Dakota, to encourage them to try some new creative actions that may be effective and impactful. We will be conducting a series of press conferences and numerous interviews with the media, governor, oil managers, oil workers, environmental activists, and ordinary folk. Our six bold statements, stuck to the sides and front of the van, will read as follows:
[1] EARTH BURNING.org: CALL GOVERNOR AT 707-xxx-xxxx TO STOP WASTING ENOUGH VALUABLE GAS TO HEAT 500,000 HOMES;
[2] TODAY, EARTH IS CONTINUOUSLY HEATING-UP WITH HARMFUL CO2 AND LETHAL METHANE GAS;
[3] SHAME ON YOU OBAMA AND CONGRESS FOR SUBSIDIZING FILTHY FOSSIL FUELS;
[4] AMERICA, CALL CONGRESS AND DEMAND STRONG CLIMATE LEGISLATION WITH A CARBON USE FEE
[5] “ALL GOOD MEN NEED DO FOR EVIL TO SUCCEED—IS NOTHING!”
[6] AMERICAN ENDS IN “I CAN”! ‘WE,THE PEOPLE’CAN BUILD A 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY REVOLUTION
On the back of our rental van will be graphics from the cover of world famous oceanographer John Englander and his book: “High Tide On Main Street: Rising Sea Level And The Coming Coastal Crisis”. On top of the van will be 10-12 card board figures of animals currently on the “endangered list”. The entire top of the truck will be engulfed (remember the BP Gulf Water Horizon disaster) in make-believe flames to signify that our Earth is constantly heating-up 24/7 and is now burning every year in many regions. Giant swatches of Russia, Australia, Greece, Colorado, and California have been on fire since 2000, with many more huge conflagrations expected. Did you know that humans are dumping 2.5 billion tons of harmful carbon dioxide into the air our children and grandchildren breathe, every second of the day?
“Even as summer swelter has given way to frost, nearly two-thirds of the U.S. remains in a severe drought, with forest fires still burning, winter crops choking in parched soil and barges nearly scraping the murky bottoms of sunken rivers. More than 62% of the continental U.S. is experiencing moderate to exceptional drought, according to the weekly Drought Monitor report released on Thursday, compared with just over 29% this time last year,” says reporter John Eligon, writing in the 12/7/2012 issue of the New York Times!
If ‘We, the people’ fail to rise up soon with collective action to pressure our Congress to pass strong Climate Change legislation that includes a carbon use fee (tax), how long will it be before our forests, grasslands, and crops are all on fire? Did you know that two months ago Australia’s thermostat hit 122 degrees F? Wow, that’s really smoking!
“Are the last days of the North Pole numbered? [John Englander says they are]. Though Arctic sea ice, which melts and reforms each summer and winter, usually reaches its lowest extent in mid-September, 2012 actually broke the record even before the end of the melting season. ‘The strong, late-season decline is indicative of how thin the ice cover is,’ Arctic sea-ice expert Walt Meier said. ‘Ice has to be quite thin to continue melting away as the sun goes down and fall approaches.’
‘The question now is whether that trend will continue—and how soon the Arctic will become ice-free. It’s a loaded question in climate science, but some researchers worry that calamity could occur—during the summer, at least—as soon as the end of this decade! That was one projection made by Wieslaw Maslowski, an Arctic expert at the Naval Postgraduate School, who spoke at a Greenpeace panel on the Arctic and Climate Change in 2011. Regardless of whether Maslowski’s timing proves to be accurate, it’s clear that the Arctic—the last frontier—is becoming the first frontier of Climate Change. And as Dan Lashof of the Natural Resources Defense Council said in a statement: ‘What happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic!’” “Last Days of the North Pole?”, “Time: 100 New Scientific Discoveries”, 2012.
John and Doug will be dressed-up as “earth firemen” with red and green outfits, red firemen hats, yellow, fire-retardant jackets, and black boots. Our Earth is heating and burning-up, 24/7, and it’s time we all joined in this huge global struggle to help put these destructive fires out – permanently!
Here’s a potential polar cap melting scenario that you might not have considered and it is absolutely deadly! Earth’s two huge ice sheets, Greenland and West Antarctica, are both melting fast --- in leaps and bounds! So are our glaciers and sea ice. If we allow both of our polar caps to melt, two huge continents worth of snow and ice, that previously reflected the sun’s heat back out into outer space [albedo effect), will then be GONE! In their place will be open, dark blue ocean, -- absorbing huge amounts of the sun’s heat. As our atmosphere and ocean temperatures intensely soar, all the permafrost in Siberia, Greenland, Canada, and Alaska will melt, releasing massive amounts of harmful CO2 and methane gas, which is 25 times more potent. This, in turn, will spike atmospheric and ocean temperatures even higher, heating-up our oceans, melting all the frozen sediment on the ocean floor and releasing colossal amounts of methane hydrates ---killing off the plankton and 50 percent of our oxygen supply. Soon thereafter, all plants on land will burn-up, decimating the other half of our oxygen supply. This is the direction we are heading in today, good people of America, with “business-as-usual”, and without strong Climate Change legislation from Congress. Some scientists are comparing us to the Titanic. Is “Spaceship Earth” acting like the Titanic or have we actually become the arrogant Titanic?
If we have, then it will then be “game over for Earth” ---as NASA’s Jim Hansen has so often declared!
‘We, the people’ of America and the world will not let this happen! Our environmental battles must be fought collectively and singularly --- when and where they happen! This truth makes North Dakota very important and we are hoping they will look forward to our arrival. If ‘We, the people’ win enough battles, we will then win the Climate Change Crisis campaign! Our great strength lies in our collective, non-violent, civil disobedience action, and great creative ideas, but only if we step-up with courage to fully engage them. If you can’t give an hour a day to help save Mother Earth, how committed are you?
Consciousness, concern, and commitment, plus courage and creativity, together with determined action and undeniable persistence, will always prevail in the end! Haven’t they always? “Never doubt that a few committed citizens can’t make a big difference, indeed, they are the only thing that ever has,” sociologist Margaret Meade said! Thanks to everybody for donating what you can to make this bold, creative, environmental action a great success. Here we come! Many Earth Blessings to one and all!

true patriots

Only true patriots
protect the right to burn the American flag

I remember watching television with my father soon after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers. We saw Americans burning the American flag after the most devastating attack ever on U.S. soil, in protest of our government.
My father was scheduled in a month, in what would be the first of three tours of duty, to be sent to Masirah Island off of the coast of Oman to fly combat missions into Iraq and Afghanistan.
Needless to say as a young child, I became enraged. My chest trembled with anger, tears coming to my eyes.
I looked to my father, expecting to see the same instinctual rage that was enveloping my thoughts, but instead I saw him smiling, not scoffing or smirking, but smiling contentedly, as if everything was as it should be. I asked him why, and it was then that he taught me one of the most important lessons about our country, one that I still hold close to my heart today.
He told me that there was only one thing that could make him more enraged than seeing his country’s flag burn, and that would be to watch the protesters who were burning the American flag being forced to stop.
I know many would do anything you could to stop an American flag from being burned. I know that many, upon seeing our flag being burned in protest, would feel the same feelings of anger and hatred as I did when I was a child.
But if you were to act on these base feelings, if you were to resort to violence to stop these protesters, I believe you would be dishonoring every U.S. soldier who has ever fought and died for our great country.
They paid the ultimate price, so that we could enjoy the freedoms and rights we enjoy today, including our freedom of speech. It is easy for us to succumb to those primal feelings of violence; any average person can grab a gun and start killing those who oppose his belief systems. We all want to stop our flag from being burned.
However, it is the truly great person who chooses not to fall victim to those violent feelings that would take away his fellow citizens’ freedom of speech.
If we choose to fall victims to our vengeful emotions, and stop people from protesting and burning our flag, then we will only blur the line between America and a country like North Korea, where the burning of their flag, or any form of protesting for that matter, is punishable by death.
If we outlaw the burning of our flag, and infringe upon that seemingly unimportant freedom of speech, I ask you America, where would it stop?
If you stamp out a burning flag against a protester’s will, you are trampling on the core ideals and values that our great country was founded on.
If you throw water on it, you are extinguishing that flame in all of us, that sacred flame that defines America as one of the greatest countries in the world.
If you refuse to tolerate the free speech of others, then how can you expect others to tolerate yours?
If you choose not to accept other’s freedom of speech, then you choose not to enjoy your own free speech.
The fact that a person can walk outside and burn the American flag is what I believe U.S. soldiers fight and die for.
I would never dare put words in the mouths of those great men and women who have died for this country, but I would like to think that if I died defending this great nation, and looked down on it and saw people protesting our government, and burning our flag, I could rest in peace knowing that my death was not in vain.
I would be proud that I gave my life for a nation that upheld its values, and, even when put to the test, refused to go against the very ideas upon which it was founded, the ideas that make it great.

OCCUPY!

FABULOUS OPPORTUNITY FOR OWS:
OCCUPY GLOBAL WARMING - CLIMATE CHANGE

Our corporately owned media has repeatedly reported that the Occupy Movement is nothing more than a bunch of ragtag, homeless commies, socialists, and disenfranchised, angry anarchists – hell-bent on a violent overthrow of our government.  Sure, these elements exist to the tune of about five per cent or less, which is mostly positive, because any activist movement needs some tough hombres with an edge.  Even Dr. King said you’ve got to challenge and incite people if you ever hope to bring about radical, fundamental changes that are so very necessary.

     Let’s face it, our media monopoly has done an excellent job of dividing and dismissing the Occupy movement as powerless and irrelevant.  And eighteen mayors, led by the richest 1% of them all, “mendacious Mike” in NYC, conspired together to delete eighteen occupied parks in eighteen major cities.  Not having a physically tangible, visible, place to call home and a viable location for millions of people to visit and volunteer, has severely hurt our movement, — as intended. Their pernicious “occupy-cleansing” has been effective and has especially hurt our ability to raise funds. Round two to the 1%!

     Our media’s response to Occupy is pretty much their stereo-typical reaction to anything outside their accepted “status quo” – a locked-up, highly dysfunctional and unhealthy status quo, which quite frankly, is precisely why our country has “gone-to-hell-in-a- nasty-hand-basket” while our Earth continues to cook 24/7.  Our college-trained media knows full well that large-scale corporate capitalism is unsustainable [based on infinite debt and infinite growth to pay off that debt] and that it is systematically poisoning and destroying our only environment and resource base. Someone ought to ask the 1% what our other options are besides planet Earth?

     Occupy has also been accused of being too non-descript, as well as too generic, carefree, and uncommitted – to nothing save a few idyllic goals.  Most of this staid media pabulum is by intentional design called “framing”, but nevertheless, it is much more difficult for these “truth spinners” to utilize their “yellow journalism” to destroy our movement when they can’t clearly define and control it.  Kudos to Occupy!

     In truth, Occupy stands for the most important human and American values of all, which is precisely why the 1% must “rally around Americana, infinite jobs and growth, and large-scale corporate capitalism” to defeat us.  As more and more Americans become well-informed, stop being hoodwinked, and begin to awaken en masse, our Occupy Movement will suddenly flourish and explode. This is the “American Spring” that we must have in order to win our war against the evil 1%. Wealthy, powerful people who don’t care about our Earth or its people are horrendously evil. Anyone in Occupy who doesn’t understand that this is clearly a war against evil wealth and power, truly doesn’t realize what we’re up against!

     Our cutting edge ideals are true freedom, equality, justice, a sustainable world economy, and real participatory democracy, — basic human rights which the 1% have guaranteed for them- selves only!  By the way sports fans, our “founding fathers” never intended for America to be a true democracy, only a nefariously representative Republic that they, the white wealthy men, could control and dominate. And they have done a marvelous job of implementing that insidious intention, because a horrific lack of an independent President, Congress, and Supreme Court is incessantly wrecking our planet and destroying our once great country.  Do you realize that labor wages have been flat since 1980 while executive/white collar salaries have increased by several hundred per cent? Do you realize that over 30 million Americans are unemployed, another 30 million are under-employed, over 7 million have lost their homes, and over five million are homeless or in prison. And how many of our college students have $50,000-$100,000 or more debts? But don’t worry, “all boats will be rising soon” with big capitalism.

     Global-Warming-Burning/Climate-Change presents the Occupy Movement with a fabulous opportunity to move into perfect alignment with the most critical issue in the history of human civilization.  More and more Americans are now waking up fast today to the realization that our Earth is in a severe crisis that threatens all life on Earth and that “business as usual” is making things much worse every day.  The vast majority of climate scientists now firmly believe that  we are definitely headed for a double crash, ecological and economic, of cosmic proportions!

     Our atmosphere is being continuously poisoned and heated with toxic greenhouse gases, our oceans are being trashed with toxic waste, plastic bags, oil spills, and pernicious carbonic acid, while our tropical forests and farmlands are clear-cut and fracked.  And it’s all being committed in the holy, untouchable name of infinite economic growth and jobs.  If our corporately bought politicians would transfer $300 billion from their sacred cow, the Military-Industrial-Congressional-Complex, to a 100 percent Renewable Energy Revolution and a Green Jobs Program, we could create ten million new jobs over the next decade and stop Global Warming in its charcoal burnt tracks!

     Last January, the General Assembly of QWS in NYC, passed a monumental resolution expressing their deep concern and veracious commitment to Earth’s environment, our only resource base: “We are now at a very dangerous tipping-point in history!  The destruction of our planet and climate change is almost at a point of no return.”  OWS’s [NYC] resolution links climate destruction to the shift in political power that lies at the heart of Occupy. ‘We must reclaim our democracy to protect our planet!’”  OWS’s Direct Action operating group is targeting all toxic fossil and non-renewable fuels and is being spearheaded by a group called ’99 for Earth’.  The OWS’s resolution also calls for “connecting the dots between the 1% and the destruction of our planet.  At one end of the chain are specific depredations on specific environments: ‘Our mountains in Appalachia are blasted; our drinking water in the Northeast is threatened by fracking; our American heartland is charted for an oil pipeline [with the dirtiest possible tar-sands oil in Alberta, Canada, that will be shipped to South Korea and China], and our forests in the Northwest are targeted for further deforestation [while the Obama administration continues to approve more and more oil drilling leases in the Gulf of Mexico, even after the recent BP disaster that spewed over 200 million gallons of toxic oil into the water].  Connect the dots and you’ll find that the corporate destruction of the Earth’s [biosphere] and climate have been ‘financed by the 1%’ and that a ‘ small group of polluting businesses’ have hijacked our political system for their own benefit,” says Jeremy Brecher, a founder for the Labor Network For Sustainability and author of more than a dozen books on labor and social history. 1

     It’s of absolute importance that the Occupy Movement get seriously involved with the Global-Warming-Burning/Climate-Change movement right because many top climate scientists believe we have already gone past the “tipping-point” and are now running on toxic fumes only.  Dr. Jim Hansen, Bill McKibben, and others have made the seminal point that this very moment in history, 2012, is arguably the most significant juncture in Earth’s evolution!

     “ ‘Sometimes facing up to the truth is just too hard!  When the facts are distressing it is easier to reframe or ignore them [and stay in one’s comfort zone while doing nothing]. Around the world only a few have truly faced up to the facts about global warming.  Apart from the climate skeptics, most people do not disbelieve what the climate scientists have been saying about the calamities expected to befall us.  But accepting intellectually [too easily dismissed ethereal thoughts] is not the same as accepting emotionally [in one’s heart and gut], the possibility that the world as we know it is heading for a horrible end.  It’s the same with our own deaths; we all accept that we will die, but it is only when death is imminent that we confront the true meaning of our mortality.’

     ‘Over the last five years, almost every advance in climate science has painted a more disturbing picture of the future.  The reluctant conclusion of the most eminent climate scientists is that the world is now on a path to a very unpleasant future and it is too late to stop it.  No one is willing to say publicly what the climate science is telling us:  that we can no longer prevent Global Warming that will this century [or even by 2050] bring about a radically transformed world…a world that is much more hostile to the survival and flourishing of life.  As I will show [in this book], this is no longer an expectation of what might happen if we do not act soon; this will happen even if the most optimistic assessment of how the world might respond to the climate disruption is validated,” says Clive Hamilton, author of “Requiem For A Species.”2

     Anyone with half a dinosaur’s brain who’s done the intense research, knows the draconian truth and is not about to be put-off by climate change naysayers and deniers.  Our “goose is  cooked” – literally!  Americans must wake-up now, vacate their Pollyanna comfort zones, and join an “Occupy” group some place in America to participate in Direct, Non-Violent, Civil Disobedience Action.  The honest challenge before us today is to see how well we can pull together in unity and solidarity to be effective and impactful agents for significant change.  How much of this Global-Warming-Burning/Climate-Change crisis can we successfully mitigate, and really fast?  This is the omnipotent challenge now raging and burning before us all right now.

     “As the Occupy Movement evolves from a wave of encampments to new forms of a densely networked, virtual and face-to-face political community, its concern with Climate Change and environmental devastation is growing and converging with activism aimed more directly at the economic depredations of the 1 per cent. That convergence may be crucial for the future of the Occupy story.  The Occupy Movement is about reclaiming the  future for people who have had their chances rubbished by three decades of global neo-liberalism and austerity. But it’s not just about paycheck economics. The destruction of the climate [the air our children breathe] and the environment [our only true home] are an integral part of the neoliberal world order.  [Perhaps it is true that ‘the new world order desires to eradicate 80% of the world’s population’?]. The same corporations, banks, and financial institutions that destroyed the economy are destroying our global environment, — for pure greed! The struggle to preserve the Earth and its atmosphere [biosphere] is, by necessity, a struggle against those forces,” Brecher says.

     Occupy would be wise and mature to adapt a new mantra: “The police are not the enemy – the 1% are!”  Anyone who fails to get the reality that we are engaged in a death knoll battle against the darkest, most forbidding, and most penurious forces of evil, is a badly deceived fool.  The police are the mercenary tools and lackeys of the 1%, but are mostly slaves and serfs as we are.  Occupy must make every intentional effort to constantly convince the police that they are being co-opted, controlled, and psychologically manipulated into doing “the master’s dirty work”. Eons of history tell us that kings, dictators, tyrants, and the wealthy, privileged few, have always acted in precisely this fashion.  Therefore, if we are truly committed to winning this war against the evil 1%, we must absolutely win over the police to our side.  Nice challenge, eh!

     The notion that “violence only creates more violence and only encourages the police to react more violently, and never works, is mostly true,– but not totally!  The Black Panthers held the police to a standoff. There may come a point in this revolution of great ideas and great potential solutions when violence will become our only option. There certainly are limits to how far we can allow the 1 % to decimate our only planet and wreck total havoc on our economic lives too.  No one in their right mind wishes for such a terrible confrontation because all wars mostly kill everyone. Remember, one million Americans died in our Civil War and it was incredibly bloody! Nevertheless, it may become necessary at some point to pick up a gun and fight. About five per cent of our Colonists decided they had to fight against Great Britain to regain their freedom from the yoke of economic, political, and military oppression.  Today, We the People are being severely oppressed and threatened with Global-Warming-Burning/Climate Change, as well as economic, political, and the military oppression of two more atrocious, unnecessary wars that will end up costing us five trillion dollars.  Is the future wellbeing of your children and grandchildren worth fighting for?  I suggest you ask yourself that salient question.

     If you haven’t read “The First American Revolution by Ray Raphael, buy it ASAP!  I can give you a 1,001 prime examples where violence was used to stop violence, — our Revolutionary War and World War II being just two excellent examples.  A third example was when the people of Western Europe grew furious at the Vikings annual rampages of raping, killing, and plundering, and decided to lie in hiding and attack.  Guess what?  After two more seasons of attacks, all Viking raids ceased.

     Sooner or later, all bullies, despots, and 1 % exploiters need to be faced down and fought, to the death if necessary.  Anyone who thinks we will be able to negotiate with the tyrant rich are operating in “la la land”.  They have most of the money and power and will never condescend to negotiate with a mere “rabble-in-arms”.  We’re nothing except slaves and trash to them.  All bullies and the vast majority of the wealthy 1 per cent are into power-dominance to control, and all bullies like most of the 1 per cent are evil doers.  They are evil because they are taking so much more than they need, leaving billions of others starving, thirsting, and destitute, and even worse, they are intentionally and systematically raping our Earth for pure greed.  If money and greed are the roots of all evil, then the 1 per cent are the perfect personification!

     Again, anyone who fails to realize that Occupy represents a colossal world battle against the worst imaginable forces of evil, has his or her head totally in the sand.  The most dangerous disease is not cancer, it’s a terminable case of cranial-rectimitis.  Edmund Burke said it best: “All good men need do for evil to succeed, — is NOTHING!”

     Once again, while I remain in favor of every conceivable form of courageous non-violent civil disobedience/direct action, as well as many creative, impactful forms of social change action, — I also realize that “there are definite limits” to how much more We the People can take. While our Earth’s only environment is incessantly laid waste for greed, and for oil, water, food, land,  gold and power, — how long do We the People dare wait before we pick up a gun and declare:  “NO MASSE!”

     At some point we must insist on a new national election and elect an independent President, Congress, and Supreme Court, or, at the very least, a majority of Independents to Congress.  We fought The Revolutionary War to become independent, but we’ve now allowed ourselves to become prisoners of a very rotten, two-party oligarchy that no longer represents us effectively.  We the People can also demand that a new peoples’ empowerment law be passed:  The National Citizens’ Initiative For Democracy which would allow us to pass two or three laws of our own choosing each year by majority vote, the first time in 236 years that we wound actually have any real participatory democracy. This would allow us to complement our Congress, not replace it. To register and sign up in favor of this great new opportunity, go to www.nci4d.org.  Our “founding fathers” – all white males who were wealthy merchants or wealthy land holders or both, specifically wrote our Constitution so they could power-dominate to control, and they have, quite successfully and ruthlessly. I say this bad shit needs to end NOW!

     In   “The First Revolution” – the good, courageous people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts finally said “no masse” after Great Britain passed the Massachusetts Government Act in which the Colonists forfeited control of their own parliament and courts among other dear freedoms, and began to act with intentional violence to protect themselves.  And their violence was totally understandable and justified.  Killing other people isn’t the worst crime:  Lacking the courage necessary to rise-up and overcome evil is!

     Guess what happened to those Colonists who had the courage to use violence to overcome the violence that was being perpetuated against them?  Because they had the backing of many people who were totally fed up and disgusted with the oppressive acts, writs, laws, provisions, regulations, and oppressions of the British Empire, their violence was incredibly effective and impactful.  We the People kicked these evil, oppressive tyrants out of Massachusetts – and eventually out of our America – forever!  So Thomas Jefferson is right:  Every so often We the common People need to conduct a revolution, like a good thunderstorm, and cleanse the land of its putrid stench.  Today the stench of greed and power is pretty damn stultifying on Wall Street, in our big banks, brokerages, hedge funds, large corporations, national governments, and even in many colleges, universities, and other major institutions. Truthfully, today our America is way out of economic, environmental, ethical, and spiritual alignment.

     Right now, Occupy is only a revolution of accusations, grievances, and bold new ideas, along with a lot of courageous/creative direct actions. We must greatly expand these endeavors and “Occupy America” physically wherever and whenever we possibly can.  My new not-for-profit, an educational/activist organization, the National Alliance Of Concerned Americans For The Wellbeing Of All People And Earth (www.ethicalwarrioractivists.org) is committed and dedicated to creating and implementing 5,000 new activist organizations in every city, town, and neighborhood in America.  You can support this most worthy and necessary endeavor by going on-line and taking a $25 annual supporting membership.  I believe it is only through massive American citizen protests that We the People will be able to elect an independent Congress and get really strong, significant Climate Change legislation passed.  Since we have already moved beyond a perilous ecological “tipping-point”, the fate of our planet and our civilization are truly in the hands of her people–and the sand in the hour glass is running out!

     Although it’s encouraging and necessary for our Occupy movement to increase, expand, and accelerate its network, both virtually and through face-to-face political/social interactions, we must also continue to occupy as many parks, streets, and other public/private areas as possible. After spending 7 weeks camped out in Zoucotti Park, I grew to realize how important a physical, tangible place actually is.  Why?  Because our body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit all need a physical place to call home and because mainstream America needs a physical – heart and guts place – to visit, encourage, and celebrate.  I will never forget the beautiful fall day at Zoucotti Park in 2011 when tens of thousands of ordinary Americans stopped by to thank “We the Occupiers” and to make a sweet donation.  That day was truly heart-felt and inspiring!

     As the Occupy movement evolves from a wave of encampments to new forms of a densely networked, virtual and face-to-face political community, its concern with Climate Change and environmental devastation is growing and converging with activism aimed more directly at the economic depredations of the 1%.  That convergence may be crucial for the future of the Occupy movement, and for the planet.  Climate and environmental concerns fit naturally into the Occupy story,” Brecher says.

     Occupy has emphatically signaled that the second American Revolution is definitely underway!  The battle lines in the sand have been clearly drawn and the 1%, including President Obama and his minions, know this truth.  Starting right now, today, — we must employ every conceivable form of non-violent civil disobedience first, before we are compelled to fight in order to eviscerate the evil 1% who are destroying our Earth and oppressing 3.5 billion people living on less than $2 per day. Approximately 50 million people are dying from thirst, bad water diseases, and starvation every year.  The 1% do not care about these people or the millions and millions of plant and animal species that are systematically becoming extinct every year.

      If tens of millions of American citizens can find the courage to step-up and step-out, — into our streets, — to protest loud and long while occupying, –I do believe we can bring about the necessary transformation of our severely dysfunctional, two-party oligarchy and the large-scale corporate capitalist system that owns it. And it is this evil, large-scale corporate cancer which is systematically ravaging our only environment for unprecedented greed. Small-business capitalism together with profit making cooperatives, not-for-profit cooperatives, and barter and trade options, could be molded into a mixed-bag economy that is healthy, sustainable, and much more equitable.  A sustainable economy equals survival, but as long as the 1% are allowed to power-dominate and rule, a sustainable world economy is simply not possible.  We must remind the 1% every day at every opportunity, that Mars is not an option!

 Our Occupy movement itself must wake-up ASAP to fully and clearly understand the colossal evil monster that it faces and what it will take to win.  With the fate of our Earth and civilization at stake, failure is simply not an affordable option.  We the People must win and we will!

     Obviously, We the 99% have a very formidable challenge facing us!  Our “founding fathers” and Colonists also had a very grave and formidable challenge facing them and they prevailed.  Here are some memorable quotes of encouragement to help see us through this most difficult struggle which absolutely must be won by 2020 or all life on Earth is totally doomed!

     George Washington reminds us that all political parties are a very bad idea [and aren’t mentioned in our Constitution].  Why?  Because they seek power for themselves – first, last, and always.  Total power corrupts – totally!”

Ben Franklin reminds us that: “The government you get is the government you deserve!”

John Adams reminds us that: “Sometimes the yoke of oppression can only be lifted by fighting to overcome it!”

Noam Chomsky reminds us that: “Freedom without opportunity is a devil’s gift, and the refusal to provide such opportunities is criminal!”

Marcus Arruda reminds us that: “Global capitalism, with its single-minded desire to consume, fails to fulfill the deepest aspirations of humanity as a whole and of each individual!”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer reminds us that: “Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility!”

Thomas Paine reminds us that: “The sun never shined on a cause of greater worth!”

Gandhi reminds us that: “Recall the face of the poorest and weakest [person] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself if the step you contemplate will be of any use to him or her.  Will he gain anything by it?  Will it restore him to a control over his or her own life and destiny?”

George Orwell reminds us that: “In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act!”

Sam Adams reminds us that: “If you love wealth [or your comfort zone] better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace.  We ask not your counsel or arms.  Crouch down [you tyrant lackey] and lick the hands that feed you.  May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were once our countryman!”

Thomas Jefferson reminds us that: “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of (its) ends, it is the right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying its principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their own Safety and Happiness!”

Captain Dougars reminds us that: “There may come a time when one realizes – in his or her deepest ‘heart of hearts’ – that evil must be faced and fought – even unto death.  In that moment of universal truth, may Providence grant me the courage to risk my own life for freedom, justice, and equality, — and the protection and wellbeing of our Earth!”

Occupy & vote!

DOES OCCUPY HAVE THE STONES
TO VOTE “NONE-OF-THE-ABOVE”?

Let’s just say, as one potential possibility, that the Occupy Movement generally stands for real freedom, justice, equality, economic/ecological sustainability, and participatory democracy throughout all levels of government, federal to local!
     And I believe [thoughts/feelings/values] it might be helpful to set five major priorites and as many smaller priorities as we desire.  For instance, utilizing open space land at the city/local level to create self-sufficient/sustainable farming – as Detroit and other cites are doing, is a perfect example.  Building resiliency at the local/bioregional level is a lesser, but still important priority than 100 percent Renewable Energy Revolution, because no one can eat, drink, breathe, or burn resiliency.  One hundred percent renewable energy equals survival and sustainability. And, the more water, food, and manufactured goods we produce at the local/bioregional level, the more self-sufficient we’ll all be.  That’s a good thing!
     In its effort to destroy the Occupy Movement, our corporately owned mainstream press claims that we are nothing but a bunch of ragtag hippies,  socialists, commies, unemployed, homeless malcontents who don’t stand for any specific goals.  Having lived at Zoucotti Park in NYC for seven weeks, I couldn’t disagree more.  Here’s five specific, outstanding goals of the Occupy Movement:
[1] Because my investigative journalism informs me [read “Requiem For A Species” by Clive Hamilton] that we have already passed an ecological “tipping-point” and are clearly now headed for a colossal double crash – ecological and economic – therefore, we must make our world economy ecologically sustainable and much more equitable;
[2] We the People must rise up en masse and insist that our Congress pass critically needed, significant legislation to stop and reduce poisonous GHG emissions while re-growing millions of acres of forests every year to sequester out existing toxic CO2 that stays in the atmosphere for hundreds of years;
[3] We the People must demand of our federal, state, and local governments that they build a 100% Renewable Energy Revolution, utilizing $300 billion from our egregiously bloated military-industrial-Congressional-complex to fuel all American corporations to build as many wind, solar, and geothermal plants as fast as possible while creating tens of millions of new “green” jobs.  All of our American people can focus on building the 100% Renewable Energy Revolution at the local/bioregional level too.  Global-Warming-Burning affects us all;
 [4] Get bills for single-payer health care and public education passed by Congress;
[5] Our two-party oligarchy is clearly rotten to the core, unhealthy, and highly dysfunctional – “the best democracy money can buy”!  Occupy must lead a national movement to elect a majority of Independents to Congress, the legislative branch.  We can all register with the National Citizens’ Initiative For Democracy led by former senator Mike Gravel [www.nci4d.us].  Passage of this national referendum would allow the citizens of America to pass several laws of their own choosing each year by majority vote…the first time in 236 years that We the People will actually have any real direct democracy.
      Occupy must also lead a national movement this year by encouraging all Americans to vote for “None-of-the-Above” by taking a magic marker with you to the national polls in November.  If we don’t stand-up for real participatory democracy and an open, honest system now, our rotten 1 percent government will remain rotten and unchanged.  Ben Franklin said: “The government you get is the government you deserve!” If you want significant change, then you must be willing to make a sacrifice to help create it.  Stop wasting your vote for the two-party oligarchy by voting for demented Democrats and repugnant Republicans. The Revolutionary War was fought so we could be free and independent.  If you want a more sane, caring, equitable government, vote Independent!
      If millions of Americans have the courage to write NONE-OF THE-ABOVE on their ballots, our message to the 1 percent elite will be loud and clear:  Start listening to We the People and voting accordingly, or we will re-place you with representatives who truly represent our desires.  This year, vote INDEPENDENT!

Survival first!

THINKING, FEELING, AND LIVING
SURVIVAL FIRST:
IS THE KEY TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

The latest Global-Warming-Burning/Climate Change research is now much more dire and threatening today than reports issued in 2007!  Recent climate change findings from Dr. Jim Hansen, the director of the NASA Goddard Space Center for Climate Studies, environmentalist and 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben, and even the usually conservative UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), — are all severe and distressing!
     Unlike many others who consider this a “negative fear-mongering” that might detract from our optimism, I’m actually applauding these vanguards. Why?  Because we are not five year-old children who are afraid of the dark!  If a 500 foot tsunami is going to hit our East Coast, I want to know about it ahead of time, not two minutes before it hits.  We Americans have a very bad ingrained habit of wanting to hide our heads in the sand to avoid conflict and dire information by remaining mired in our “comfort zones” hoping bad things will go away by themselves.  Unfortunately, they rarely do, — and, as most of us know, denial is a really crummy way of dealing with critical matter.  Our American denial will not solve our Climate Change crisis because denial never solves anything: Bold courage and actions do!
     Since 2007 I’ve been writing and saying that Global Warming is 101 times worse than the vast majority of our climate scientists have been telling us. And, over and over again, I’ve been asking everybody in sight this salient question: What the hell will it take to wake-up these sleeping-sheep Americans to pressure our Congress to pass significant Climate Change legislation in time?  Katrina didn’t do it and Sandy hasn’t done it, so what the hell will it take people – a nuclear disaster – a U.S. Fukashima? I’m telling you again folks, the 500 foot tsunami is coming our way and you had better wake-up now and get to work on positive solutions – local, bioregional, national, and global solutions if you truly love your children, grandchildren, and Earth! We are most definitely and assuredly on a non-stop, run-a-way-rollercoaster, — heading towards a dead-end-double-crash:  economic and ecological.  We absolutely must wake-up now before we pass an irreversible tipping-point of no return whereby Nature goes haywire.  Conservation biologist Guy McPherson has been making the rounds here in the Pioneer Valley, and his climate news is the same as mine: Very Bleak!  Here’s what he has to say:
      “The [ensuing] environmental catastrophe will likely make the Earth uninhabitable in a matter of decades!” The National Center for Atmospheric Research predicted in January of 2011 that global temperatures are likely, by the end of the century, to cause irreversible feedbacks. McPherson said [poisonous] methane gas [20-26 times worse than toxic CO2] will be released when rising global temperatures trigger melting of the Siberian permafrost [and  the Canadian, Greenland, and Alaskan permafrost], plus the Amazon forest soil and boreal peat.  [As our oceans, which cover 75 percent of the Earth’s surface continue to heat-up, just imagine how hot and insidious things will get when all the methane hydrates frozen in ocean sediment on the bottom get released and bubble-up and out into our atmosphere. This will result in a colossal catastrophe beyond imagination or description].  ‘An ice-free Arctic Ocean hasn’t happened for 3 million years since before there were humans on this planet,’ McPherson said.  ‘It’s ‘horrific’ that politicians, the media, and the general public have ignored the mounting evidence of dramatic natural releases of [toxic] methane such as spontaneous Russian forest and bog fires.’  ‘These [‘climate forcings’] are irreversible’, McPherson said of these natural releases of greenhouse gases that have already been documented.  ‘You can’t put the cap back on the soda bottle once that [toxic] carbon dioxide starts coming out.’”
      Michael Casey, reporting for the Associated Press from Doha, Qatar on 11/29/2012, said:  “An area of Arctic sea ice bigger than the United States melted this year according to the U.N. weather agency, which said the dramatic decline illustrates that climate change is happening ‘before our eyes.’ In a report released at U.N .climate talks in the Qatari capital of Doha, the World Meteorological Organization said the Arctic ice melt was one of a myriad of extreme and record-breaking weather events to hit the planet in 2012.  Droughts devastated nearly two-thirds of the U.S. and western Russia and southern Europe.  Floods swamped West Africa and heat waves left much of the Northern Hemisphere sweltering.’
     ‘But it was the ice melt that seemed to dominate the annual climate report, with the U.N. concluding ice cover had reached ‘a new record low’ in the area around the North Pole and that the loss from March to September was a staggering 11.83 million square kilometers (4.57 million square miles) — an area bigger than the United States.  This dire climate news – following on the heels of a report Tuesday that found melting permafrost could significantly amplify global warming – comes as delegates from nearly 200 countries struggled for a third day to lay the groundwork for a deal that would cut [GHG] emissions in an attempt to ensure that temperatures don’t rise more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees F) over what they were in preindustrial times.  Temperatures have already risen about 0.8 degrees C (1.4 degrees F) according to the latest report by the UN IPCC.’” [The more Arctic sea ice that melts, the less sunlight and heat can be reflected back out into outer space. The more dark blue ocean we have, the more toxic CO2 will be absorbed into the ocean, which is already 30 percent carbonic acid].
     We’ve already heated-up our atmosphere 0.8 degrees Celsius, which doesn’t sound like much, but actually is because our Earth hasn’t been this hot since 122,000 years ago!  If we go over 2 degrees Celsius, which we’re now on track to do with “business-as-usual”, we’re looking at 30%-70% of all plant, animal, and humans going extinct, — and many climate scientists believe even this may be a conservative estimate. I believe we have until 2020 to achieve something significant.  After 2020 you can stick a fork in us because we’re basically cooked and done, as in “burnt-toast”!
      Five years ago both our Pentagon and CIA said Global Warming was the number one threat to national and world security!  If you haven’t read Gwenn Dyer’s book “Climate Wars” or Clive Hamilton’s book “Requiem For A Species”, I suggest you do.  Their message is cold and harsh, but also encouraging.  Why?  First off, they are giving us the realistic truth as they see it, not some overly optimistic “Pollyanna”, “tell-me-it-ain’t-so-Joe” bullspit! Without the stark truth we won’t have any clarity of understanding and can’t mount a viable campaign of effective and impactful climate solutions. With the stark truth in hand, if we are willing and able to face it, we have a damn good chance of acting now to prevent the 500 foot tsunami from hitting and wiping us out, but ‘We, the people’ absolutely must wake up NOW.  The hourglass has been upside down since the first Industrial Revolution began in circa 1760, but has been severely oscillated since 1970 with human induced Global Warming.  Our Earth’s biosphere is fragile and time is running out.  It’s truly up to us.  God is not going to save us.  We caused this poisonous mess and it’s our responsibility to heal our broken, out-of-alignment relationship with Mother-Nature Earth and clean-it-up before it spirals totally out-of-control.  Mark my words: “Mother Earth will extinct us if necessary to save life on Earth!”
     According to the United Nations and Global Security Initiative, in cooperation with the Environmental Change and Security Project of the Woodrow Wilson Center, abrupt Climate Change is now a matter of international security concern [written in 2007]:
     “Environmental changes can threaten global, national, and local people!  Environmental issues include land degradation, climate change, water quality and quantity, and the management and distribution of natural-resource assets [such as air, water, food, oil, forests, land, and minerals]. These factors can contribute directly to conflict, or can be linked to conflict by exacerbating other causes such as poverty, migration, small arms, infectious diseases, and [population explosion].  For example, experts predict that climate change will trigger enormous physical and social changes [i.e., Katrina, that tsunami that hit Indonesia, and Sandy] like water shortage, natural disasters, decreased agricultural productivity, increased rates of infectious diseases [which we are seeing now with malaria, Ebola, and encephalitis, etcetera], and shifts in human migration.’
      [According to Gwenn Dyer, author of “Climate Wars”, as rising temperatures escalate and increased droughts, floods, and food and water shortages grow, -- hundreds of millions of refugees will be “picking up guns” to cross local, regional, and national borders to “go get me some”.  I predict before this decade is out, we will experience some of these wars.  The handwritings already on the subway walls,…just look at Africa and the Middle East].
     ‘These shifts in human migration [and increased wars] could significantly impact international security by leading to [increased] competition for natural resources, destabilizing weak states, and increasing humanitarian crises.  However, managing environmental issues and natural resources can also build confidence and contribute to peace through cooperation across lines of tension.’  According to U.N. Secretary General Koffi Annan (former), environmental security is linked to environmental degradation, resource scarcity, climate change.  Today, these are real challenges that demand a collective response: ‘All of us know there are new threats that must be faced, — or, perhaps, old threats in new and dangerous combinations; new forms of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. While some consider these threats as self-evidently the main challenge to world peace and security, others feel more menaced today by small arms employed in civil conflicts, or by so-called ‘soft threats’ such as the persistence of extreme poverty, the disparity of [unjust] income between and within societies, and the spread of infectious diseases, or climate change and environmental degradation!’”
     I used to write that stopping and correcting Global Warming is all about sustainability, but today I realize there’s a larger, deeper truth here: This issue is all about survival now!  Global-Warming-Burning/Climate-Change is all about survival first.  Without survival there won’t be any sustainable anything!  Without clean, healthy, abundant air, water, food, and renewable energy, there can’t be any survival!  Sustainability is a nice, kind, amenable, Earth-friendly, ‘don’t worry about anything’ amelioration, and that’s precisely the huge problem I have with it.  It keeps us sleeping-sheep Americans in a false belief-state that everything is going to be “okie-dokie” fine when we should already be past that point of self-deception. Our ongoing stupor and Pollyanna optimism fail to compel us towards the critical concern and urgent action that is now required to collectively get the job done. We need to wake-up FAST!
    We must think and feel SURVIVAL FIRST!  “We, the people’ must demand that all coal-fired power plants are phased out immediately in the next three years and replaced with wind and solar, even if our federal government has to help subsidize this most significant of U.S. transformations!  And ‘We, the people’ must insist that our Congress pass significant Climate Change legislation authorizing the creation and implementation of a 100% Renewable Energy Revolution ASAP!  If American corporations and government, plus our American people, stand-up with courage to lead the way, the whole world will chomp at-the-bit to join us.  We must stop dragging anchor and lead the world with courage, creativity, and determined resolve!
     Without 100% renewable energy we can’t survive!  Why?  Because we can not survive without an abundance of healthy air, water, and food, — and only renewable energy can make this possible! With 100% renewable energy, we can build as many ocean-fed reservoirs in arid areas and use desalination around the globe to produce all the clean water we need for drinking and drip irrigation. Think and feel “Survival First” and you’ll get it viscerally in your heart and guts.
     It’s simply not enough to work on local/state/bioregional sustainability only!  It’s not enough because we don’t have the luxury of time on our side to effect large-scale systemic change on a global-reach basis.  Global-Warming-Burning/Climate-Change is accumulating and accelerating every day 24/7 in leaps and bounds, and it is doing so exponentially. This climate-crisis is 101 times worse than we feared in 2007.  It’s really up to ‘We, the people’.  Who else can do it?  We must place incredibly immense pressure on our Congress now.  Let’s do it together. Here’s how:
     I’ve decided to write a one page form letter to each one of my senators and congressional representatives, and I will be sending this letter to each one of them each week of the year after January 20, 2012, when our new Congress begins. Just imagine the difference it might make if they each received 10 million letters each week from concerned Americans?
     Ben Franklin reminds us all “that the government you get is the government you deserve”!  President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “If you want me to do something, demand that I do it!” President Obama says he wants to seriously address Global Warming.  Let’s give him the fire-power he needs to get the job done.  If you need help with your form-letter, send me an e-mail and I’ll assist you.  Let’s remember that American ends in ‘I can’.  If I can, and you can, then we can. As the Lakota Indians say, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for!”
 “Let’s do this thing people!”
